Hi and welcome to Tea Kaki SG!
Tea Kaki SG (UEN: 53447665A) is a home-based business operating out of Singapore that sells freshly made Hong Kong-style milk tea.
It is owned by me, Charing, the daughter of HK immigrants who migrated to Singapore in 1990.
Our Origins
During the pandemic, an inability to visit Hong Kong led to me picking up the basics of making HK milk tea at home. After a few years of testing, tweaking and trial attempts, I have finally managed to get the silky-smooth taste that evaporated milk provides to HK milk tea, combined with the strong black tea taste that makes HK milk tea so beloved amongst enthusiasts!
My biggest achievement? The approval by my Hong Konger family members (which, if you know Hongkongers, means a lot)!
The Story Behind The Name Tea Kaki
This is a continuation of an inside joke with my family!
My father has a bunch of Hongkonger friends he meets regularly for tea, and it's a common thing to call them 茶友, or Tea buddies. That's where the mandarin name for the brand came from.
For the English name: My parents were learning Singlish slang and found Kaki (as in buddy or friend) very amusing. Later on, I was asking them how to translate the Cantonese word 脚 (leg) in reference to 麻雀脚 (the other people who make up the four needed for a mahjong game), and my mom laughed and said "mahjong kakis"!
I felt that choosing the business name Tea Kaki would mix the Singapore and Hongkong influence in a way that was unique yet easy to remember. Our aim is for friends/family/buddies to sit around and enjoy tea together!
Our Business Choices
My aim as a business owner is to avoid contributing to the large amount of waste generated by the F&B industry. So far, we have achieved it by buying locally as much as possible (to reduce air shipping). This includes the Ceylon tea leaves purchased from a local supplier as well as the evaporated milk purchased in bulk from a local brand. However, this is more complex when it comes to packaging. After a lot of research and consultation with a sustainability brand, we have come to the conclusion that, as a start, we will use PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles.
We need such a (compared to large brands) small amount of bottles that the amount of resources needed to produce alternatives (both aluminium and glass are resource-intensive to create) and ship them, let alone recycle them effectively…of course, we will continue to search for packaging alternatives that work for us. Right now, we highly encourage customers to bring their own reusable bottles as much as possible (there is an option in the ‘Size’ to bring your own bottle), providing a permanent "$1 off" discount for those who do.
